Charlotte and Topsail Wimpy photographed at the picturesque Fairlight Lodge, home to Genetically Gifted.
Charlotte imported her palomino quarterhorse, Wimpy, from New Zealand in November of 2018. Now gelded, Wimpy has sired many successful progeny before shining under Charlotte. They had a highly successful partnership in reining, winning over 30 championship titles. Wimpy is now kicking up dirt with Charlotte’s mum, Karen, as Charlotte completes her dreaded HSC year!
This is still one of my favourite sessions to date. What can I say? Barbie horse with a gorgeous long mane and the most STUNNING bridle… it was so special.
From our black background session, where Wimpy was persuaded to stay still and pose beautifully through the liberal application of carrots and other treats, to the horse & rider session, I just LOVE how they turned out.
When we finished the portraits, Charlotte got into her reining show gear and saddled Wimpy for the horse and rider photographs. Wimpy was very obliging, serving some stunning poses, in between trying to use Charlotte as a scratching post, nibbling on her clothes, and somehow ending up with a mouthful of mud!
I came back the next week to capture them both in action, tearing up dust in the reining pen. The sliding stops, spins and roll backs… it is was SO fun to watch. Made me want to go out and buy some new boots and hat on the spot! I just loved seeing the similarities and differences between my own discipline of dressage. At the end of the day, we’re all horse lovers and so many of the same principles of horsemanship underpin all disciplines.
I’m hard pressed to choose a favourite from this session, but it would have to be this portrait of Wimpy. He’s truly so impressive, and I’m so glad to have photographed him!
I loved it so much it’s now one of my print samples, coming soon to a trade stand near you!
